Description

A delightful and easy-to-make traditional Irish bread that is perfect for any occasion.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Add the buttermilk and melted butter, and mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
  6. Cut a deep cross into the top of the dough.
  7. Bake for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool on a wire rack before slicing.

Notes

  • This bread is best eaten fresh but can also be toasted the next day.
  • For a sweeter version, add raisins or currants to the dough.
