- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons melted butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Add the buttermilk and melted butter, and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
- Cut a deep cross into the top of the dough.
- Bake for 30-40 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Cool on a wire rack before slicing.
Notes
- This bread is best eaten fresh but can also be toasted the next day.
- For a sweeter version, add raisins or currants to the dough.
