A traditional Irish bread made with baking soda instead of yeast, perfect for St. Patrick’s Day or any occasion.
Ingredients

- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 1/4 cup sugar
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
- Stir until a sticky dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead gently.
- Shape into a round loaf and place on a baking sheet.
- Cut a cross on top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
Notes
- For a slightly sweeter bread, add raisins or currants.
- Serve warm with butter.
- This bread is best eaten fresh but can be stored for a few days.
